Cattle at Pipe Springs National Monument

After breaking camp, we visited Pipe Springs National Monument. When we paid our admission, we noticed that the time on the wall was one hour ahead of the time on my watch. I asked the cashier if we were in the Pacific Time Zone. He said, "No, we're in the Twilight Zone". He explained that Arizona is in the Mountain Time Zone but doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time.

The monument is a museum about the history of this Mormon Outpost. Mormon settlers contributed cattle instead of money to the Church. The church established a ranch at Pipe Springs to manage the herd.

In later years, it became a hideout for polygamous families when the Mormon Church banned polygamy, paving the way to Utah's statehood. The location put them out of jurisdiction of Utah's authority and the Arizona authorities couldn't be bothered to cross the Grand Canyon to go after them. We continued to Fredonia where we had lunch. Dave made some adjustments to my front brakes.

We departed Fredonia into a stiff headwind. The scenery out here is very vast and scenic. I took a lot of photos today.. We rode across the open plain. The wind tortured us the whole way.

Finally, we reached the Kaibab National Forrest. All of a sudden, we had the wind at our backs. However, the climbs got steeper with switchbacks. We were already beat-up from the headwinds.

We stopped to wait out a thunderstorm. By the time we got back on the road, it was getting late in the afternoon. We made it into camp just before dark. It was too late to cook. So we walked across the street to a restaurant for supper.
