Bryce, Zion & North Rim
Day 10 - Hatch to Bryce Canyon National Park, UT

Touring can require creative
bike repair soloutions
|
We woke up to find frost on our
tents this morning. Bob had an especially difficult time with the cold. I was OK with
it. I had a big breakfast at a nearby restaurant and hit the road.
About 4 miles into the ride, I noticed
my rear tire was soft. I had a slow leak due to a puncture. When I replaced the tire I
discovered a worse problem with my rear brake. For some reason, I was missing a key part
that holds the brake shoe in place. After much fiddling among Duane and Bob along with a
lot of cussing from yours truly. Bob substituted my small adjustable wrench for the
missing part. I can't describe it. You'll have to wait for the photo on my web site.
|
A few miles later, we reached the
junction of US 89 and UT12. Here we found a bike rental place. I stopped to see if they
had any parts for me. The owner was very nice. He cannibalized a entire brake assembly
off one of his rental bike for $20.

Red Canyon
|
We continued into Red Canyon. It was very nice with several hoodoos. I took several photos
here. They were putting the finishing touches on a new bike path. Personally, I feel the
money would be better spent widening the existing road with passing lanes and adequate shoulders.
|
I reached Bryce Canyon National Park. I
found our campsite and Ken's bike. Ken was nowhere to be seen. Bob and Duane arrived a few minutes
later. Ken came back from his hike shortly after we finished pitching our tents.

Bryce Canyon National Park
Bob, Duane, Ken and I took a short
walk to see the hoodoos. I took lots of photos. At one point we noticed our shadows
against a hoodoo. We started making shadow images against the hoodoo. One of them was
quite obscene. Yes, it was quite juvenile. But, boys will be boys.
More Bryce Canyon Photos
Dave and Jean showed up just before dark.
Ken checked himself into a posh hotel room just outside the park complete with a Jacuzzi. That
guy is hopeless.
