Yucatan Bicycle Tour
Day 9 Valladolid
I felt a little better in the morning. But,
I did not feel well enough to travel. We decided to spend the day in Valladolid. By 10 a.m.,
the fever was gone. I spent most of the day sleeping in the hotel room.
By early evening, I felt well enough to eat again. We went to a Dominos Pizza. We had
been avoiding American chain restaurants. However, I didn't want to delay my recovery by
subjecting tender tummy to any unfamiliar food. I also felt that the hot pizza oven would
kill any nasty microbes that could cause further intestinal turmoil.

These signs appeared in downtown Valladolid.

At the Dominos, we ran into a couple of stereotypical "ugly American" tourists who couldn't
speak a word of Spanish. They were very frustrated because they couldn't place an order
for pizza. They didn't even bother to carry a Spanish-English dictionary or phrase book.
Nor did they exhibit any interest or respect for the local culture. Of course, I helped
them out with my limited Spanish. They were with one of the many tour busses operating
out of Cancun.

We also dropped off some clothes at a local laundry. For 14 pesos ($1.40 U.S.) our
cloths were washed, folded and delivered to our hotel. What a bargain!
Later in the evening, we saw a fiesta in the main square. It was the 30th anniversary
celebration for vocational high school in the city. The kids were dressed up in traditional
costumes and were performing songs and dances.
Tomorrow we plan to take a bus to Coba. It's a 70 mile ride and Paul and I don't
want to expose ourselves to the heat.
