Yucatan Bicycle Tour
Day 7 Izamal to Piste (Chichen Itza)

Paul and Tom
Paul and Tom take a break at a small store on the way to Chichen Itza.
We left Izamal at first light, about 5:30 a.m. We rode about 18 miles to the town of Quintana Roo (not to be confused with the state of the same name) before it got really hot. We stopped in the center of this town near a school. We bought some Cokes and sat down in the shade. A group of girls about 11 or 12 years old came by giggling and gawking at the two gringos sitting in front of their school. Finally one of them got up enough nerve to test her English asking, "What is your name". I answered in English, "My name is Tom". Then they all giggled and ran into the building.

After Quintana Roo the endless henequen fields gave way to jungle. The road narrowed and we finally found some shade.

Although, he did have some difficult moments, Paul rode a lot stronger today. He's also starting to eat again. We had partly cloudy skys today. And, that helped a lot.

We continued on finally reaching the town of Piste, just outside the entrance to Chitzen Itza at about 11 a.m. We found a great hotel with air-conditioning and a pool. But alas, we have no toilet seat.

We got some lunch and took a short siesta in the air-conditioned room. About 2:30 we rode the short distance to Chitzen Itza. Chitzen Itza is the most impressive Mayan city we have seen yet. It is also the most crowded. Tour busses operating out of Cancun truck them in like cattle.

Pyramid
Temple of Kukulkan, Chichen Itza.
We had a great time at Chitzen Itza. There was a lot to see and I toook many photos.

We went back to the hotel for supper. Right now we're sitting in a dark bar with a couple of cold cervazes. This is a bar for the locals. We're just sitting here taking it all in. Our waitress, and some guy who came after we did, are groping each other at the bar. It's almost like watching a porno movie.

Tomorrow we have a short ride to Valladolid.
