Day 14 Tulum to Punta Bete

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen
Alas, all good things must come to an end. We left Tulum at 6 a.m. this morning. The road along the Caribbean coast (they call it the Riviera Maya) is wide flat and busy. We've got a wide shoulder. So, we feel very safe riding on it. We rode about 40 miles to Playa del Carmen. We got here about 9:30 this morning. We made excellent time.

We're not impressed with Playa. We considered staying in Playa as it is the half way point between Tulum and Cancun. Unfortunately, it's crowded. The street vendors and the store clerks are relentless. You simply can not find peace and quiet. The beach is nothing to write home about either. After seeing and getting some breakfast, we pushed on.

Punta Bets
The beach at Punta Bete
We rode a few miles north to a small town named Punta Bete. What a difference! We're staying in a small place owned by an American expatriate and her Mexican husband. There is no electricity here. But, that's OK with us. We can see Cozumel from here. The beach is a few feet from our front door.

Fish dinner

Paul and I took a long walk south along the beach. We were amazed at the large volume of trash that had washed up along the shore. Our host told blamed the cruise ships going to Cozumel for the mess. She s aid they routinely throw trash overboard.

Later we had dinner at a small beach-front restaurant in Punta Bete frequented by locals. I had some delicious fish.
