Yucatan Bicycle Tour
Day 10 Valladolid to Coba

Conjunto Pinturas
Conjunto Pinturas (Paintings complex), Coba.
As planned, we took the first bus to Coba at 8:30 a.m. There are not many choices for lodging in Coba. So we are staying in an overpriced place run by Club Med.

Coba is located in the jungle. It has an entirely differrent feel than the other Mayan sites we have visited. It does not have the detailed workmanship of Chichen Itza or Uxmal. It is also very spread out. We did a considerable amount of walking here.

Coba is also different in that it has two lakes (ponds my most standards). The Yucatan has very few bodies of fresh water above ground. All the water is located under ground and is accessed by cenotes.

On the shore of the lake, we saw a sign at the end of a dock that said, "Crocodile visit 5 pesos". We took the bait. A teenage boy came out with a long stick. He splashed it around in the water. After a few minutes a 5-foot long croc swam up to the dock. The crocodile hung around for a few minutes until he figured out that there was no food in the water and left.

There isn't much to do here in the evening. We walked around the town a bit. But it lacks the vitality of the other cities and towns we have visited.

Tomorrow, we bike 26 mules to Tulum and the Caribbean.
