Day 12 Eureka to Marin Garden Club Grove, CA

I left the Eureka DOA... I mean KOA and got breakfast in Eureka. Heading out of Eureka, another bonehead driver yelled at me. This seems to happen only in the larger towns and cities. This time I held my temper.

Pacific Lumber Company

After Eureka, 101 turns back into a freeway. I rode through rolling farmland. I got off 101 for few miles in Loleta. I got back on 101 and rode to the Town of Scotia where I stopped for some sightseeing.

The Pacific Lumber Company owns the Town of Scotia. It is one of the last company towns left in America. I toured the Pacific Lumber Company mill and saw how raw logs being turned into finished lumber. The machinery in that place is awesome.

I got back on the 101 and was passed by this guy on a mountain bike pulling a BOB trailer. We chatted for a few minutes then he blew past me. Next I met up with a woman named Cathy whom I had met two days earlier at Prairie Creek.

Avenue of the Giants

Cathy and I rode together for the rest of the day. We left the 101 and began riding on the Avenue of the Giants past lots of beautiful redwoods. We camped in a grove of redwoods at a hiker/biker camp in Marin Garden Club Grove. The guidebook said there was a store in nearby Weott. Cathy needed to buy dinner and I wanted to pick up supplies. The store in Weott was empty. We found a "for sale" sign in the window. We went back to the hiker/biker camp and I made us both suppers with some pasta, mushrooms and Alfredo sauce I bought in Scotia. I almost didn't get groceries there.

Marin Garden Club Grove Shortly after supper, Tom and Cheri arrived. I had met them a few days before in Harris Beach State Park in Oregon. The four of us sat around the campfire talking about trip and all of the people we've met on the ride.
