For
Moab area rides, get the book Above and Beyond Slickrock by
Todd Campbell. It's the best guide to Moab mountain biking around. You
can order this book and other books and maps from the Adventurous
Traveler Bookstore

This
is my first professionally led and supported bike tour. I was very
pleased with Western Spirit
Cycling. If you like to eat well on your bike trips this is the
company to tour with. The service was top notch. Our guides were first
rate. I would not hesitate to take another tour with Western Spirit

We
enjoyed our stay at Pioneer
Spring B&B. Carol took good care of us. She even packed up my
elk antler and shipped it home for me.
-
We
enjoyed some excellent meals at Buck's Steak House in Moab.

The
Delorme Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer was an excellent source of
topographical maps. The scale and detail of these maps are perfect
for cycling. You can get it from the Adventurous
Traveler Bookstore
-
Bicycling
the Blue Ridge by Elizabeth and Charlie Skinner is the bible for
anyone cycling Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway. The book
is copyrighted in 1990. Some listings for accommodations and bike
shops are out of date. You should call
ahead to verify that critical services such as lodging or bike shops are
still available. This book is also available from the Adventurous
Traveler Bookstore.
-
A
Cyclist's Guide to the Shenandoah Valley, lists many day trips in
the Shenandoah Valley. This book also contains historical and
geological information about the Shenandoah Valley. This book is also
available from the the Adventurous
Traveler Bookstore
-
Most
of the roads in we cycled were lightly traveled and pleasant.
However, did encounter two really nasty roads. In both cases these
were East-West roads between the Blue Ridge and I-81. This makes
sense as the Blue Ridge tends to funnel East-West traffic through it's
notches.
-
The
back roads in the Shenandoah Valley are very pleasant and
interesting. Enjoy them whenever possible.
-
Be
prepared for rain and fog.

Nova
Scotia
Recommendations

Nova
Scotia has a very well devoloped tourism agency. I suggest that
you begin your trip planning by ordering the Doers and Dreamer's
Guide and the Nova Scotia Scenic Travelways Map. You
can order them both on-line free of charge from Nova
Scotia Tourism. You probably won't want to carry the entire
book with you. I cut out the pages listing the accomodations in
the areas that I was traveling in and carried them in my handlebar
bag.
-
Most
Ferries are very bicycle friendly. Also, there is something
romantic about traveling on a ship. Here is a listing of ferries

I
had a good stay at the Blue and
White Motel. The room was clean and the price was
reasonable. It's fairly close to the airport. They also
stored my bike case for the week for me.

The
Frank Slide Interpretive Centre
is fascinating museum with many exhibits on the history of Crowsnest
Pass and the 1903 Frank Slide disaster.

Seattle to San Francisco
Recommendations
- The Pacific Coast of the United States
is a classic bicycle touring route. Bicycling the Pacific Coast by Tom Kirkendall &
Vicky Spring is a detailed cycling book for anyone cycling this area. Everyone bicycle
touring the Pacific coast carries this book. You can get it from the Adventurous Traveler
Book Store. Although the book is very good, things change over time and stores move or
close. Always make sure you have the most recent edition available and don't wait too
late in the day to buy your groceries.
- I can't say enough good things
about the hiker/biker campsites in the state parks of
Washington, Oregon and
California. These parks provide affordable campsites to bicycle tourists.
More importantly, they are gathering places where cyclists from all over the world on this popular touring route
share experiences and camaraderie.
- In San Francisco,
Casa Arguello B&B was very accommodating. William, the owner, was very accommodating
to my unique needs. I shipped my bike case ahead to the B&B. When I arrived, he use his
kitchen to disassemble and pack my bike.

Bryce, Zion & North Rim
Recommendations
-
When cycling in Southern Utah and
Northern Arizona, be conservative in planning your daily mileage. The large elevation
changes, head winds, heat and dry climate will slow you down.
-
Bring lots of film. You'll find a new
photo opportunity every 10 steps.
-
Don't miss the hike to Angels Landing at Zion National Park.
