Day 6 Sable River to the Ovens

Fishing Boat

Fishing Boat
I got up early and was on the road at 7:30 AM.  It was another gorgeous day.  My goal today was Bryan's house in Riverport.  I also wanted to visit the the Seaside Adjunct of Kejimkujik National Park.

My map indicated two roads leading to the National Park from Highway 103, one from Port Joli, the other from Port Moulton.  I didn't see any signs for the park in Port Joli.  I continued on to Port Moulton.   I didn't see any signs for the park at Port Moulton either.  I took the road out of Port Moulton.  A vicious dog attacked me a few miles later at the road's dead-end.  By some miracle, I got out of there without becoming this dog's meals on wheels.  I remember feeling the dog's teeth through my cycling shoes.   Fortunately for me, the dog went after my feet.   Had the dog gone after my bare legs, I certainly would have received some nasty injuries.

Once I got  away from the dog. I asked some people for directions to the Park.  They told me to take the road out of Port Joli.  I skipped the park as I didn't feel like backtracking.

Back on Highway 103, I rode a short distance to Sommerville where I stopped to look at the beach.  I left 103 here and took a side road the rest of the way to Liverpool.  On reaching Liverpool I visited the local tourist information office.  I mentioned my difficulties in finding the Seaside Adjunct of Kejimkujik National Park.  The woman running the office told me the signs to the park were removed.  The park service was renovating the facilities and wanted do discourage visitation.  I stopped into a pub for a lunch of fish and chips.  The narrow hard mountain bike saddle I had been using was killing my bum.  I replaced it with a wider softer saddle at a bike shop.  I left Liverpool on Highway 103.

I got on Route 331 near East Medway and climbed some big hills. The coast seemed to get prettier and prettier the further East I went.  The scenery was especially pretty near Cherry Cove.

I called Bryan at Crescent Beach to let her know I was in the area.  Bryan apologized and told me she would have to renege on her invitation.   She had caught a cold on the boat and had been in bed sick since arriving at Riverport.  I wished her well .  The tourist guide listed two campgrounds in Riverport.

LaHave River Ferry
LaHave River Cable Ferry
I stopped for snack at a bakery in West LaHave while waiting for the ferry.   A thick cable guides the ferry accross the LaHave river.  There is no charge for cyclists on any of the small ferries operated by the Province of Nova Scotia.

On the other side, I headed to Riverport.  It was easy to see why an artist like Bryan would spend her summers here.  It was a very pretty town.    I bought my groceries for the evening and asked about the two campgrounds in town.  The clerk suggested the Ovens Natural Park.

I found the park after taking a wrong turn down a dead-end dirt road.  I got a waterfront site.

I made my fresh chicken, ride and vegetables for supper.  It was a welcome break from the canned food I had been eating.   After supper I watched a magnificent sunset.
